Father Zachary Shore, a former De La Salle Christian Brother of the District of San Francisco, died on July 23, 2011, in San Francisco after many years of fragile health.
A native of San Francisco, Father Shore attended St. Paul’s grammar school there and the Juniorate at Mont La Salle before entering the Novitiate and receiving his habit as a Christian Brother on August 14, 1955. He continued studies at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, where he earned his bachelors degree in 1960. Over the next several years, he went on to earn two teaching credentials and masters degrees in education and in counseling and guidance. During his twenty-nine years as Brother Zachary, he taught at Sacred Heart High School (now Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory) in San Francisco from 1960-1965, Cathedral High School in Los Angeles from 1965-1967, and Garces High School in Bakersfield from 1967-1970, where he was vice-principal and, later, principal. He also served as Director of Novices for the District of San Francisco from 1973-1977, Vocation Director for several years, and Director General of Mont La Salle.
After receiving a dispensation from his vows as a Christian Brother in 1979, he studied at Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park and was ordained as a diocesan priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1981. Father Shore’s first assignment was to Our Lady of Mercy Church in Daly City. This was followed by appointments in San Francisco to Saint Cecilia Parish, to Most Holy Redeemer Church as pastor for twelve years, and to The Church of the Visitacion as pastor for four years. During those years he was also Director of Cemeteries for the Archdiocese and served on the Cemeteries Board and the Priests’ Retirement Board. Due to failing health, Father Zachary retired on July 1, 2006, and lived at Alma Via of San Francisco until his death.
