Brother Virgil Evers, FSC
October 13, 1914 - November 13, 2009

Brother Virgil Prosper Evers, FSC, died on November 13, 2009, at Mont La Salle, Napa, California, at the age of 95. One of nine children of Nicholas Michael Evers and Mary Elizabeth Ellis Evers, he was born in Rogers, Minnesota, on October 13, 1914, and was baptized Harold Prosper Evers.

Brother Virgil entered the Novitiate in Napa on August 5, 1933, pronounced his first vows in August of 1934, and made his final vows in 1939. He attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga from 1934 to 1937 and then began 42 years as an educator. His assignments included Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, Sacred Heart and St. Peter’s High Schools in San Francisco, St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno, and Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento. He also had several assignments in the Napa area, including Justin-Siena High School, and the Juniorate and St. Mary’s Residence School at Mont La Salle.

With his retirement to the Holy Family Community at Mont La Salle in 1979, Brother Virgil turned to a new ministry, devoting his time over the next 21 years as a volunteer in the Catholic Chaplain’s Program at the California Veterans Home in Yountville, near Mont La Salle. In recognition of his services, he was made an honorary veteran in 2001.
