Approximately
80 miles north of San Francisco,
Saint Joseph's Camp rests on the bluffs
overlooking the Russian River. The
small river towns of Duncans Millls,
Monte Rio, Guerneville, and Occidental
are a drive away as is Jenner and
the California State beaches along
the coast. Over many years the De
La Salle Brothers have used the
camp as a summer and weekend retreat,
building many of the structures
currently in use on the property.
Brother Victorinus Jasper writes
in 1927:

"Every
summer for the last nine years
the Christian Brothers of California
have been spending part of their
vacation at La Salle Villa near
Moscow on the Northwestern Pacific
Railroad. This villa is on the
most picturesque spot on the
Russian River. It stands on
a wooded bluff sixty feet high,
where the river describes a
quadrant on its journey to the
ocean. On the bluff grow alder,
oak, redwood and manzanita trees,
interspersed with shrubbery
and ivy. A towering sequoia
stands at the curve. To the
north and west of the buildings
is a pine forest, planted forty
years ago to break the summer
winds." |

| The
Russian River area is rich in history.
Early Russian settlers and traders
are responsible for the names "Russian"
River and "Moscow" Road. In the wake
of the Gold Rush, loggers came, felling
the gigantic redwoods and sending
them by boat and rail to San Francisco
in order to support the housing growth.
In later years, the Russian River
area became and continues today as
a vacation resort for the San Francisco
Bay Area. |
