THROUGH
LENT TO EASTER: Brother
Stanislaus Campbell,
FSC, Visitor of the
District of San Francisco,
reflects on the season: “As
we make our way through
Lent toward the annual
celebration of Jesus’ life-giving
death in which our
communion with him
and with one another
has its origin, we
might focus particularly
on our living in
communion, in association
for the service of
the poor through
education. In a global
society marked by
war, violence, division,
litigation, and individualism,
people committed
to living and working
together in communion
or association for
the human and Christian
education of the
young are certainly
not only a counter-cultural
force but a necessary
witness to the young
of how their lives
must be lived if
peace and genuine
happiness are to
be theirs.” But
how, he asks, do
we maintain this
communion and nourish
this association
among us? To read
his answers, click

you have heard about
the recovery of the

after World War II.
The rebuilding will
take years.” So
writes Ken Tedesco,
president of De La
Salle High School
in New Orleans, in
his February update
on the situation.
Ken expresses the
gratitude of Lasallians
in New Orleans for
the massive aid that
has been given. Read

NEWS BRIEFS
from the
INTERNATIONAL
LASALLIAN MISSION
CENTRO LA
SALLE, MEXICO This
center for “integral
education” in
Tijuana is well known
to many in our District.
Brothers and partners
from this District
were instrumental
in its founding in
1979 and we have
continued to support
its ever-growing
mission of outreach
to the poor. Our
District’s “Venaver” programs
have taken hundreds
of students to Tijuana
to assist with the
work and to learn
from the people there.
An examination of
the impact and meaning
of el Centro’s
work is in a recent
publication now available
on the Rome Web site.
Available
in pdf format in
four languages, it
is also published
in booklet form.
“THE
LASALLIAN CHARISM” AS
IT IS LIVED Another
new publication available
in pdf format is
on Lasallian
Charism . ”‘Charism
is a gift which the
Holy Spirit gives
to a person for community
service or, better
yet, to enable the
person to contribute
to the community’s
mission.” A
full exploration
of the meaning and
history of Lasallian
charism, and personal
witnesses by eight
modern Lasallians
-- including Gery
Short of the District
of San Francisco
and Karin and Michael
Anderer-McClelland
of the Midwest District – make
this a compelling
new document.
WHERE DO
THE RIGHTS OF THE
CHILD BEGIN? Brother
Nicholas Capelle,
FSC, who is now the
Visitor of the District
of France, gives
us a document titled “Est
d é ja homme,
qui le sera.” In
English translation,
that is “It
is already now the
person it will become.” This
MEL
Bulletin No. 22 (also available
in Spanish and Italian)
is an investigation
of human life in
its embryonic and
fetal stages. The
bulletin, Brother
Nicholas writes, “is
meant to provoke
reflection and to
encourage all Lasallian
educators” to
give thought to the
origins of life and
its need for protection.
With essays, international
data, and a glossary,
this is a rich resource.
Available in pdf
format at the Generalate
Web site in Rome.
Also available in
booklet form.
