A Death in the Family: Brother Richard Camara, FSC: Brother Richard Camara, a Brother of the District of San Francisco since 1954, died on January 11 in Concord, California. His funeral will be in Napa on Saturday, January 17. For complete information, visit www.delasalle.org.
Alumnus and Alumna Say Thanks: Read the talk that Mary Miller, class of 2005 at De La Salle North Catholic, gave to the ‘Changing Destinies” luncheon at the school. Presidential Changes: At San Miguel High School in Tucson, Elizabeth Goettl has announced that she will take up a new post in July at the national offices of the Cristo Rey Network. Our 140th anniversary story continues: Just posted are Chapters 5 and 6 of the history of the District: In the early years of the twentieth century the District of San Francisco experienced a series of disasters, difficulties, and setbacks. Facing earthquakes, fires, lack of funds, few vocations, and controversies over curriculum, Lasallian education in the west was in for tough times. America magazine editor’s Lasallian speech is published: The keynote address on educating for faith and justice given by Father Drew Christiansen, SJ, at the Huether Lasallian Conference in November has been published by the Catholic New Service in its ORIGINS periodical, the December 4 issue. VOCATION AWARENESS
On the national level, a new website has recently been launched to introduce the vocation of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Visit www.brothersvocation.org.
In this District, the ‘Called and Chosen’ Vocation Retreat for female students takes place January 17-19, following a successful retreat for male students held in November. (For a story on the November retreat, see http://www.delasalle.org/2008LasallianVocationRetreat.shtml.)
There will also be Vocation Discernment retreats for men at Mont La Salle in 2009. Visit www.delasalle.org and click on the headline “Explore the Brother’s Life.”
