District of San Francisco Begins Its 135th Year on the West Coast
1868 - 2003

Brother Visitor's Message

On behalf of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in the District of San Francisco, past and present, it is my pleasure to introduce a new feature on our District web site that celebrates the history of the Brothers and Lasallian education on the West Coast as we enter our 135th year. August 10, 2003 will mark 135 years since the pioneer Brothers docked in San Francisco Bay to begin the work of education at Saint Mary's College, established in 1863 by Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany.

Leading up to August 2003, monthly history installments will tell the story of the early days of the San Francisco District, beginning with the departure of the Brothers for the West Coast from New York Harbor on July 16, 1868. District Archivists Brother Bertram Coleman, FSC and Mrs. Andrea Miller have compiled stories, diary accounts, news articles, and photos of the Brothers and others who established our District. I invite and encourage you to follow the journey of the first Brothers and Lasallian schools on the West Coast through our online history series this coming year. I hope their stories - and their faith - will inspire the work we continue today.
