Brother David Brennan, FSC, Provincial
of the San Francisco District shares news of the September 3, 2000
Napa earthquake,
long to be remembered by residents of the area. The event coincided
with robing day at Mont La Salle for four Novices from the San Francisco
and New York Districts. Brother Jeffrey Calligan, FSC, shares his
thoughts about both events.
Brother Patrick Moore, FSC, of the District of San Francisco was one
of three religious Brothers who were recipients of the
Call to Brotherhood Awards for 2000, given by the National Association
of Religious Brothers (NARB), Chicago. Brother Patrick is currently
a professor and spiritual counselor at a seminary in London for Methodist,
Anglican, and United Reformed seminarians. Among the 45 award recipients
since its inception in 1985 are De La Salle Christian Brothers Luke
Salm (1986), Charles Reutemann (1988), Joseph Porter (1989), and Stephen
Olert (1994).
Signs
of Faith, the magazine of the San Francisco District, announces
a special Commemorative Issue to be published later this fall in celebration
of the 2000-2001 anniversaries of
John Baptist de La Salle- his
birth in 1650, canonization in 1900, and naming as Patron Saint of
All Teachers of Youth in 1950. Also featured are profiles of
Lasallian educational institutions in the District today, and an interview
with District participants in the Brothers'
43rd General Chapter in Rome last spring.
Celebrations marking De La Salle's anniversaries continue throughout
the Lasallian world. At Centro
La Salle in Tijuana, Mexico, the center's new chapel was blessed
and named St. La Salle Chapel this past May 24, the centennial of
De La Salle's canonization. That same day, all school chapels in the
Brothers' District of North Mexico were dedicated or re-dedicated
to the Founder. How will your community mark the Lasallian anniversaries
during 2000-2001? Let us
know.
Brother George Van Grieken, FSC, Coordinator of Lasallian Formation
for the District, and Director of the Brothers' Community at Christian
Brothers High School, Sacramento, received a notable review of his
book,

(1999), in the "Catholic Education" Journal's September 2000
issue. The book is available through
Christian Brothers Conference and at Amazon.com.
"It was an uncontested people's choice to dedicate the Town of Moraga's
new History Center to Brother Dennis Goodman, FSC," reported Saint
Mary's College Update magazine. Brother Dennis, now residing
at Mont La Salle, was highly instrumental in the founding of the Moraga
Historical Society in 1965, and is well-known for his continuing contributions
to preservation of the town's heritage.
Saint
Joseph School, Sunnyside, and
La Salle High School, Yakima, announced this summer the appointments
of Mr. Tim McGree as President of both Lasallian schools in Washington
State, and Mr. Jerry St. George as Principal at Saint Joseph's. Mr.
McGree served as Project Coordinator for the 1998 founding of La Salle,
and recently retired as its Board Chair to undertake his new roles.
Mr. St. George, a long-time area educator and school administrator,
will oversee Saint Joseph Elementary, now in its third year as a Lasallian
school. In August, La Salle celebrated the dedication of its future

Cardinal Francis George (news article). La Salle opened its third
school year at its
new campus in Union Gap, its first year conducting classes for
all four grade levels.

On June 20, Brother David Brennan, Provincial, formally announced
to Brothers of the District names for the two newest Lasallian educational
ventures in Portland, Oregon, and in San Francisco. Both schools are
scheduled to open in fall 2001- De
La Salle North Catholic High School, Portland, and
De Marillac Middle School in San Francisco's Tenderloin. De
Marillac is named for Saint Louise de Marillac, foundress of the Daughters
of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. The school will be co-sponsored
by the Brothers and Daughters, who together conduct
Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco. In Portland,
the Brothers will bring Catholic secondary education to North Portland
for the first time since 1970, when the former North Catholic High
School burned down.
New Web sites are up and running at
Cathedral High School, Los Angeles, and
Saint Mary's College High School, Berkeley. Cathedral opened the
celebration of the school's 75th anniversary with a formal
Diamond Anniversary Dinner & Dance on June 10th. An anniversary
liturgy and on-campus reception are planned for October, and the annual

culminate the Diamond Jubilee festivities.
