Portland School Rewarded for Peace Education

De La Salle North Catholic High School was one of ten Portland, Oregon, schools presented with a Harold Schnitzer Spirit of Unity Award for efforts in promoting peace education. In addition to a $500 prize given to the honored schools, students attended an October 25th address by Claes Nobel, grand nephew of Nobel Peace Prize founder Albert Nobel. The presentation took place at St. Cecilia School in Beaverton, Oregon.
In his speech, Mr. Nobel encouraged students to practice seven rights: right thoughts, right words, right deeds, right attitudes, right livelihood, right here and right now. “Universal peace is much more than peace on earth,” he said. "It is the peace we have in ourselves, how we behave."
Various peace programs at De La Salle North Catholic focused on teaching conflict resolution skills and peace leadership. The awards are sponsored by the Wholistic Peace Institute at Concordia University.
