DE LA SALLE HOUSE, BERKELEY

The District of San Francisco will relocate its Postulancy Program from Mont La Salle in Napa to Berkeley in summer 2000. Postulancy is the first year of residency for men discerning a vocation as a De La Salle Christian Brother. This initial year provides the postulant an experience of community living, participation in educational ministry at one of the Bay Area's Lasallian educational works, and religious formation in scripture, the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Catholic teachings, and spirituality for religious life. Through these experiences, postulants can discern their readiness to enter the Novitiate Program at Mont La Salle with other candidates from the U.S./Toronto Region.
The name chosen for the new Berkeley community is De La Salle House, readily identifying it with the spiritual charism and educational tradition of the Founder. It is hoped that De La Salle House will serve as a contact community for many Contacts and Aspirants studying at colleges and universities in the Bay Area.

De La Salle House (front and rear views at left) is located near the north entrance to the University of California, and also near Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union. Its proximity to GTU will provide opportunities for contact with men and women in formation programs in other religious congregations, and for regular participation in Holy Spirit-Newman Catholic Parish.

The Berkeley home was the former house of studies for clerical candidates in the Carmelite (Oakville) congregation. Able to accommodate a community of eight, the home will also contain a chapel, library, and classroom/workroom.
