Editor's Letter
By Brother George Van Grieken, FSC

One of the goals of Signs of Faith is to highlight those people and those activities that are true Signs of Faith for the rest of us, that touch our hearts in such a way that we leave with a renewed appreciation for our common ministry. The primary sign of faith for many of us is the person of John Baptist de La Salle himself. It is his example, his leadership, and his continued influence that identifies the educational heritage that bears his name.

This issue of Signs of Faith is different from previous issues in that it focuses almost exclusively on our Lasallian heritage. From the life, pedagogy, and spirituality of Saint John Baptist de La Salle to the 43rd General Chapter and the many and varied works of the District of San Francisco, each article provides some facet of our identity as Lasallian educators. Past history, present history, and future history are all part of who we are as signs of faith for others. The articles in this issue are provided to recall the rich educational heritage that we have been given and to nourish the teaching vocation to which we have been called.

Because of its unique character, this issue may be used as a good, short, yet accessible overview of the living tradition of De La Salle and the ministry that he brought about. Both current and new teachers, coaches, and staff members – along with prospective Board members, present parents, local clergy, students, and others – will, we hope, benefit from its contents and come away with a deeper appreciation for the educational momentum of over three centuries of service towards those confided to our care.
