San Miguel High School in Tucson, Arizona, has been selected by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) as one of ten 2010 MetLife Foundation Breakthrough Schools. The honor includes a $5,000 grant award from the MetLife Foundation and the opportunity for the school’s Principal, Brother Nick Gonzalez, to participate in the NASSP Convention in March.
Initiated in 2007, the Breakthrough Schools project identifies and showcases middle and high schools serving students who are living in poverty, helping them to improve their academic performance. Schools are chosen based on documented success in improving student achievement. Since its beginning in 2004, 100% of San Miguel’s first two senior classes have graduated and were accepted into college. Collectively, the two classes have been awarded $6 million in scholarships and grants.
