A Unique Freshman Experience
At Saint Mary’s College High School

The freshman class of 2014 at Saint Mary's in Berkeley inaugurated a new program intended to build community and spirit among themselves and their teachers. Called the Freshman Experience, it was a three-day event built around Faith, Service, and Community, the three touchstones of the high school’s philosophy.

Faith was celebrated with an on-campus retreat, while a day-long visit to St. Mary's College in Moraga fostered Community, introducing students to the story of the Founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle, and to the Lasallian Mission.

The third component, service, focused student involvement at food banks and elementary schools. Some freshman tutored at St. Elizabeth, St. Vincent, St. John the Baptist, and St. Martin de Porres Schools, and others worked at food banks in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa counties.

For each of the events, the freshmen were with different groups of students, giving them an opportunity to meet and bond with a large number of classmates.
