Seventy-five students and moderators from eight District high schools participated in the tenth West Coast Lasallian Youth Assembly from June 12 -17th held at the University of Portland, Oregon. The theme of this year’s Assembly was Signum Fidei—Signs of Faith; it was designed to encourage students to live as a sign of faith in the world today. The week’s activities centered on the Lasallian Youth tenets of faith, service and community.
Throughout the Assembly, students participated in service projects, gathered in prayer, and celebrated community. They began the week as a unit working in a Salvation Army shelter in downtown Portland. In following days, they separated into smaller groups that served projects with inner-city elementary schools and local agencies within the city. These included Assumption Village, Downtown Chapel, the St. Francis Dining Hall, the Oregon Food Bank, and various Loaves and Fishes ministries.
In addition to their service activities, students were able to visit the two Lasallian schools in the area—De La Salle North Catholic and La Salle Catholic College Preparatory high schools and enjoyed a free day of hiking the Columbia Gorge and a downtown Portland group scavenger hunt. Participants also commissioned the LV’s Ride core riders group as the bicyclists began their national cross county bike ride. (See the banner below.)
