Forty-one participants and moderators from seven schools in the San Francisco District gathered for a weekend of reflection to consider God’s calling in their lives. Called and Chosen: A Lasallian Vocation Retreat for Young Women was the first of two annual gatherings providing high school students the opportunity to explore vocations. It was held at Saint Joseph’s Camp from January 14th to the 16th under the direction of Heather Ruple, Director of Lasallian Student Programs, and Brother George Van Grieken, Director of Vocation Ministry. Auxiliary Visitor Brother James Joost attended for the support and accompaniment of the participants.
The weekend program provided group sessions led by adults who shared their own vocation stories of calls to the single, married or religious life. Students were given personal time to quietly reflect on how and where God was calling them in their lives. They were able to affirm their own faith journeys in small groups and explore their own vocational call. Discussion topics included identifying and celebrating their gifts and talents; finding ways to deepen faith and vocation through high school and into college; balancing Faith, Service and Community in their lives; and considering opportunities of becoming a Lasallian Partner or Volunteer. Meals and recreation time added to the creation of a community spirit for the attendees.
Heather Ruple felt that the weekend provided a valuable experience for the students. “It was so encouraging to hear these young women talk about their vocational journeys in the context of their Lasallian education. The openness and honesty in the sharing was a reflection of the community that was created during the experience.”
The retreat for young men will be held on the weekend of February 18-20, also at Saint Joseph’s Camp.
